Grandma Browns Baked Beans

This recipe is for a copycat version of Grandma Brown's Baked Beans. It is a simple recipe that can be easily followed. Anyone can make these delicious beans!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb Navy beans
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 8 cups Water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 lb Ham or bacon
  • 1 cup Dark brown sugar
  • 1 Onion (optional)
  • 1 Bay leaf (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Soak the beans overnight in cold water. (You can also do a "quick soak" by boiling the beans for 2 minutes, then removing them from heat and letting them sit in hot water for an hour.)
  • Drain the beans and add them to a large pot with the baking soda and 8 cups of fresh water.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Add salt to taste and simmer for another 30 minutes.
  • Add the ham or bacon, brown sugar, onion, and bay leaf (if using) and simmer for another 1-2 hours, or until the beans are tender and the sauce is thickened.
  • Discard the bay leaf before serving.
  • Serve with cornbread or over rice.
