How long does it take to Air Fry chicken wings at 400 degrees? I know an excellent recipe with the correct cooking times and temperatures,

The air fryer is amazing for a healthy diet, fixing a quick meal using fewer oils, and retaining flavor. When used correctly, foods will have a much bolder taste when cooked in an air fryer, because it traps the aroma very well. You can also make meals less calorie dense this way.

When air frying wings, the extra fat will drip from them into the fryer. You can cook around 6-7 wings in an average fryer, with a good side dish, that’s good for two regular-sized portions.

You can trick your way into 3-4 more wings by standing them up against the sides.

Air frying is great for quick dinners or lunches on busy days. Just load them up with meat and veggies and let them cook throughout.

However, with chicken wings, always prepare the sides separately.

Don’t stuff veggies next to them, because the extra moisture in the veggies will just steam the wings, and furthermore, hot air won’t have enough space around them to circulate and crisp them up.

What is the best temperature to Air Fry chicken wings?

Chicken wings cooking time and temperature

Chicken wings, be they skinless or skin-on versions, are best cooked at around 400 degrees Fahrenheit in the air fryer. It’s also a good way to sort of steam-cook them on medium heat for one-half of the cooking time, then turn the heat on high and crisp them up well. This will result in a tender, soft, and moist inside, but a golden and browned outside.

Stuffing the air fryer is the worst thing you can do to chicken wings.

They won’t crisp up this way. The crunch is made by letting air circulate around them properly. Let them breathe, then place them apart. A trick to use is standing them up in the fryer. Otherwise, just cook them in two.

In an air fryer, it takes a batch of skin-on chicken wings 25–30 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit to be crispy-good.

For skinless wings, the cooking time is between 18-23 minutes, slightly less, due to not having a fatty outer layer to crisp up, but that also leaves the meat prone to drying.

The case is similar to frozen wings, but the process is slightly different.

First, just toss the frozen wings into the preheated 400-degree air fryer for 5-6 minutes plain, without any rub.

Then take them out, and let them drain for a few minutes.

Then cover the slightly cooked wings with flour/corn starch/baking powder, or better yet, with a mixture of these, then cover with the sauce and rub. Toss them back into the air fryer for 16-20 minutes, evenly spaced apart.

The two-phase rub-dipping of these wings has to make them extra rich-tasting and covered everywhere. Make sure to completely pat dry your wings before starting the cooking process; otherwise, they won’t crunch, and the seasonings won’t stick to them evenly.

Should I use skinless chicken wings?

This recipe, and most wing recipes as well, work with both skinless and skin-on chicken wings perfectly. You can go both ways.

However, skinless wings require slightly less cooking time, so reduce it by a few minutes, whether you are air frying, pan-frying, deep-frying, or grilling them. Also, when cooking a lot of wings at the same time, make sure to toss or turn them more.

You wouldn’t think so, but chicken wings are actually healthy. They are lean meat with lots of protein.

The bad thing is the fatty, sugary rub we put all over them. But with a healthier approach, and leaner, better rubs, you can make this dish suitable for a healthy lifestyle and any diet, maybe except vegetarian or vegan, of course.

When cooking skin-on chicken wings, always pat them dry completely; otherwise, they will steam instead of crunching.

Skins are generally better left on for extra depth of flavor, their fats bringing out the taste of rubs and spices and keeping the meat from drying out by retaining the juices in them.

If you get rid of the skin of wings, make sure to compensate with lots of rubs, sauces, and added juices. Otherwise, the meat will be just plain dry and boring.

Can I replace some ingredients of the recipe?

Recipes and alterations to them are always up to personal preference. You can switch and swap any of these recipes as you wish. You can keep the rubs and change up the wings with any other meat.

Also, you can cook any type of meat in the air fryer, and these spices will do good on them, whichever you choose. Technically, chicken thighs hit the closest to chicken wings. The cooking times will be the exact same as well.

This recipe will be amazing with shrimp as well. Next time you should try them out!

You can change up the seasoning in this dish as well. Instead of corn starch, you can use baking powder. The outcome will more-or-less be the same. You will get the same crunchiness, but the browning won’t be as good as with corn.

For a similar taste profile, you can use mustard instead of soy sauce. If you want something heavier, black pepper can be substituted for cayenne peppers, chili flakes, or powder if you prefer. For a depth of flavor, smoked paprika can be a great addition as well.

Tips and tricks to improve the recipe

Air fried chicken wings

When air frying, the key is to let the hot air circulate and evenly cook the ingredients, be they meat or vegetables. Meaning, you have to place the things apart so they don’t touch.

In an average air fryer, you can cook around 6-7 wings at a time.

This can be increased by standing up the wings, meaning they just slightly touch. But standing up wings along the sides of the air fryer can allow them to cook properly, and you can make a bigger batch in one go

The more butter, the merrier. Restaurants also know this. That’s the secret to their rich, sticky, delicious wings all the time. Use this trick at home!

Also, dipping the wings in flour, baking powder, or corn starch before saucing and applying a rub is the only way to get truly dreamy, crispy brown wings. In an air fryer, this is the way to get wings that look like they have been deep-fried.

These substances break down the peptides in the skin due to their being alkaline, making them crunchy and caramelized.

Final words

Air frying is also great for refreshing leftover meat, such as wings. You will need 5-10 minutes to crisp them up again, just by shaking them once during the cooking time. They will taste just as good as fresh ones.

Make sure to dry the skins of raw chicken wings completely before cooking. Salt them generously beforehand, which lets the moisture drain easily.

Pair them with fresh veggies or potato salads with some acidic vinaigrettes. Adding some caramelizing ingredients to the wings lets them brown and crunch properly. Some such ingredients are fruit juices, soy sauces, nut cremes, like peanut, and boldly flavored rubs.
