How long does it take to cook the pulled pork?

Cooking times and temperatures

It can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours depending on how much meat is in the slow cooker. The rule of thumb for slow cooking meats is about 1 hour per pound. 6-10 hours

How many servings?

This recipe will serve up to 12 people, but again it depends on serving size preferences.

Makes great leftovers.

What should I serve with the pulled pork?

Only your favorite buns! Slaw is a great all-round compliment to this sandwich as well, try our creamy coleslaw recipe .

How do I adjust this recipe for a larger group?

You can always add more meat to the cooker just make sure you’re monitoring your cooking time so it doesn’t burn.

What is a good sauce to serve with the pulled pork?

Again you can never go wrong with a simple slaw, but my personal favorite is this Spicy Sauce .

How to avoid dry meat?

  • Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the meat. Pull out of the oven when it reaches an internal temperature of 200 degrees F.
  • Allow the meat to rest for 15 minutes before pulling apart with two forks.
  • Add reserved liquid from the pan as needed while you are pulling apart the meat if it seems dry.
  • Serve on a bun or tortilla. Enjoy!

How can I get the best flavor?

  1. Pork Butt works best for this recipe as it has the marbling of fat needed to keep the meat moist.
  2. Use garlic salt with parsley (plain table salt will work, but won’t have the same flavor). Adding onion powder and black pepper will give you more flavor.
  3. A great way to tenderize the meat is to tenderize it before cooking.
  4. Adding apple juice to the water will give the meat more flavor.  Cider vinegar can also be used.
  5. Omit sugar if you want it more spicy, use BBQ sauce instead of mustard and Worcestershire sauce if desired. Enjoy!
  6. Cornbread is the best accompaniment to some good pulled pork!
  7. Add more garlic salt, onion powder, and black pepper for additional seasoning.
  8. When pulling apart the meat use two forks rather than your hands as this will make it easier to shred. You can also add a little of the reserved liquid from the pan to keep the meat moist.
  9. Cook uncovered for 30 minutes at 250 degrees F to thicken the sauce and give it a chance to caramelize on top of your pulled pork.
  10. Use a full pork butt with the bone.

If you have a smaller cut of meat, leave it in the oven longer or increase the temperature to 275 degrees F. This will ensure that you do not overcook your pulled pork and dry it out.

Now, this all depends on what kind of texture you prefer from your pulled pork. If you want a more tender pulled pork, allow it to cook on low heat for longer periods of time, if you prefer your pulled pork to be more coarse and have a bit of a crust then add the coals earlier on in the cooking process and finish off on higher heats.

What side dishes can we consider with Pit boss pulled pork butt?

  • Baked beans, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese pair well with pulled pork.
  • Coleslaw is the perfect accompaniment to your barbecue meal! It makes a great side dish that brings all of the flavors together.
