What is the Best Temperature to Slow Roast Prime Rib?

Prime rib cooking time and temperature

When slow roasting the prime rib, you want to ensure that you do so at the right temperature. Doing so will ensure that it cooks well, giving you the texture you wish to inside and outside. The temperature you use may vary depending on the kind of oven you are using.

But, you cook it at the same temperature no matter how you want it done. It means that whether you like it well-done or medium-rare, the oven cooking temperature will be the same. The only thing that will vary is the period you cook the prime rib and the internal temperature it should reach.

Usually, the ideal temperature for slow roasting prime rib is 200ºF. This temperature is perfect if you use an oven that works by convection to cook things. So, it transfers heat from it to the outside of the ribs.

While the 200ºF is a pretty low temperature for roasting, it will ensure that the prime ribs become pinker and has their juices intact. It will take longer to roast your rib, but that’s the point of using this temperature level. Also, before placing the ribs in the oven, be sure to preheat the oven at this temperature.

If you are not using the convection oven, cook it at 225 degrees. No matter the temperature you choose to use, roast it until the internal temperature is ideal for you.

How Long Does it Take to Cook Prime Ribs at 200 Degrees?

Prime rib

Prime ribs will take different times to cook, depending on how you want it done. Also, the size of ribs will determine how long they will take to get ready. Typically, each pound should be prepared within 30 minutes to 1 hour if you cook it at 200 ºF.

So if you are making several pounds of the prime rib, give it a couple of hours to get ready. Also, they will take quite a long time until they reach the ideal internal temperature. On the other hand, others will need less time if the internal temperature they need to get is small.

But be sure to always take it out of the fridge several hours before cooking it to give time for defrosting.

Also, you will need to provide yourself with a 1-hour buffer when cooking the ribs. Remember, the ribs will lose some heat as you check whether it is ready, so you must add more time to recover the temperature.
